In India , the missionaries brought a revolutionary change . Especially Kerala . If you see the state was called as a madman's asylum by Swami Vivekananda in the year 1890 due to the caste system and social inequality . Now 128 years later , Kerala has 98% literacy and is one of the best states in terms of governance , healthcare and affordable education . What happened ? The missionaries are what happened to that state . They transformed lives with the gospel . If you see in malayalam , a school used to be called ""Pallikoodum" this was because they were established by the missionaries and were close to churches . Most of the schools and Hospitals were set up by the missionaries . Missionaries brought healthcare , education to our state . Along with the Gospel they also helped with other aspects of life , that changed brought our downtrodden madman's asylum to become "God's own country ". The Gospel has immense power to transform , that combined with social service or charity can change and has changed the lives of people groups . It can bring people up from their down trodden way of life . Look at CMC Vellore , one of the best hospitals in the country , the first to train women nurses was set up by Ida Scudder . She came from a family of missionary doctors in India . She on her own collected money form the United States to build it . Look at Pandita Ramabai , she lost her family to the Bengal Famine . She became a Christian Missionary from a high caste Hindu background , she stood up for womens' rights and was acknowledged by Queen Victoria .
In 1896, during a severe famine Ramabai toured the villages of Maharashtra with a caravan of bullock carts and rescued thousands of outcast children, child widows, orphans, and other destitute women and brought them to the shelter of Mukti and Sharada Sadan. A learned woman knowing seven languages, she also translated the Bible into her mother tongue—Marathi. Look at Mother Teresa , who touched people by living and loving like Christ did . Acting the part of being a christian involves loving unconditionally like Christ . Christianity is not just talk about amazing love , you need to show that love through charity and help the people . Whenever any social issue or natural calamity strikes , the church should step in because that is definitely what Christ would do . In india , there is 70% rural population living in poor conditions , the church can change that by educating them , giving them healthcare and also showing the Love of Christ not just talking about it . Christianity is Charity . I rest my case .
Hey all ,
I for one believe that the church has immense influence and power and resources that it should use for the general betterment of society around us because like D.L Moody said "Out of 100 people only one will read the bible , other 99 read the christian"
